  • Overview

    Summary: This position works full-time within the corporate Underwriting Department in St. Petersburg, FL. The Underwriter is responsible for reviewing risks for acceptability within UPC risk guidelines. May assist in setting the underwriting direction of UPC Insurance in all states in which the company does business. This position also has responsibility for maintaining relationships between UPC and the Underwriting and Customer Service departments at the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) service providers. The Underwriter is responsible for taking action to achieve results that positively impact profitability and sales.

    Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

    Using strong organizational and interpersonal skills, the duties will include:

    • Evaluate and determine acceptability of individual risks submitted to corporate underwriting and communicate results through BPO, State Marketing/Territory Managers, Agents, Insureds and Product Management as necessary.
    • Assisting the direction of underwriting for UPC Insurance in all states in which the company does business
    • Contributing to the development, implementation, and monitoring of all underwriting rules, guidelines, policies, and procedures
    • Providing higher risk review to BPO Underwriters and field State Marketing Directors/Territory Managers
    • Conducting renewal underwriting to ensure acceptability of risks and to improve the performance of the book of business
    • Participating with Product Management in-depth analysis of Homeowners and Dwelling Fire programs in all states to examine profitability as well as ongoing effectiveness of rules, guidelines, policies, and procedures
    • Coordinating the relationship between UPC Insurance and the Underwriting and Customer Service departments at the BPO service provider
    • Collaborating with Product Management on development of new products and programs
    • Collaborating with Claims on resolution of coverage issues and adverse risk development
    • Collaborating with Marketing to communicate company underwriting policies to the field
    • Participating in and managing Underwriting and cross-departmental projects
    • Performing other related duties as assigned in support of the organization’s mission to “Keep the Promise®”.

    Education and/or Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience; minimum three (3+) years of experience P&C underwriting.  Prefer multistate homeowners underwriting experience in states UPC is licensed. 
    • As required by regulatory entities. Ability to acquire insurance licenses as required by role. Florida license in good standing is required within six (6) months from employment start date.
    • Professional designation – CPCU, CIC, and/or API – preferred or willing to obtain
    • Excellent verbal/written communication skills and organizational skills.
    • Strong computer skills, i.e. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and web-based programs.
    • Ability to understand the long-term and short-term perspectives of situations.
    • Ability to manage relationships in a fast-paced environment, while demonstrating persistence and problem-solving skills.
