  • Overview

    Summary of Position:

    The Director of Underwriting & Operations is responsible for leading and directing all aspects of UPC’s Personal and Commercial risk management, underwriting and agent/customer service functions.  The Director of Underwriting & Operations will work closely with Product Management, Claims, Marketing, Actuarial and Information Technology to ensure the policies written by UPC meet or exceed all risk selection and exposure management criteria.  In addition, the Director of Underwriting & Operations will work with Skyway Reinsurance to ensure we efficiently capture all data elements needed to continuously improve catastrophe model output.  The Director of Underwriting & Operations will also lead the development of and then have direct oversight and management responsibilities for all aspects of UPC’s underwriting, customer and agent servicing operations including UPC’s to be developed Customer Care Center.

    Organizational Relationships: The Director of Underwriting & Operations reports to the Chief Operating Officer. This position also has regular contact with the company’s vendors, as well as all other company departments, and the agent distribution force.


    Job Responsibilities:

    • Oversee development, implementation and monitoring of all underwriting rules, guidelines and procedures. Assure that all standards are met and consistently applied.
    • Participate in the design and complete implementation of underwriting and risk management strategies that are consistent with product management targets and reflective of marketplace conditions while meeting all growth, revenue and profit goals.
    • Manage full execution of UPC’s risk selection and risk management protocols and procedures.
    • Participate in the development of and subsequently have direct oversight for UPC’s Customer Care Center which will be the backbone of UPC insourcing all customer and agent service needs.  
    • Create and uphold the UPC culture throughout the Customer Care Center ensuring all customer and associate contact is consistent with UPC Core Values.
    • Fully interrogate and develop capabilities through continuous innovation of data and analytics to move UPC closer to its vision of a binding business using only insured name and address.
    • Vendor Management – Evaluates services and systems available through various underwriting vendors including data vendors, inspection providers, and other underwriting service providers.
    • Develop and implement ongoing renewal underwriting and large loss review programs to support product management profitability objectives.
    • Support all new state and product initiatives.
    • Provide direction, management and training of underwriting, audit and all customer contact center staff.
    • Conduct audits and business reviews of all agents/accounts as needed or determined by Senior Management.
    • Other duties or projects as directed by Senior Management


    Qualifications: Education/Work Experience:

    • 4 year college degree in related field preferred, or equivalent work experience
    • 10+ years of property-casualty underwriting experience, with broad underwriting experience across classes of business and lines of business
    • High degree of business, insurance and marketplace knowledge
    • Program expertise and experience working with independent agent channel highly preferred
    • Clearly demonstrates specific knowledge of personal property lines including underwriting, marketing and product development
    • Solid understanding of personal lines products, financials, issuing systems, service requirements and overall goals and objectives

    Certificates/Licensure: Not required.


    Environmental Demands: The duties of this position are typically performed in an office setting.  There will be some air and road travel involved.


    Physical Requirements: This position requires minimal physical exertion.  However, in order to properly perform the functions of the job, good speaking and hearing skills are required. 


    Mental Requirements: Skills necessary for the effective performance of this position’s job functions include: decision-making and analytical abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, effective problem-solving, oral and written communication capabilities, ability to fully utilize computers and computer programs.


    Equipment Used: Computers, calculators, telephones.
