  • Overview

    Summary: The NOC Monitoring Engineer is a principle contributor to meeting our UPC team objectives. The NOC Engineer will work closely with management, project management, engineering, support and the operations teams to build a culture of high performance, high availability, and high visibility into all aspects of the UPC network. They will work with management to design and implement monitoring strategies for hardware, network and enterprise-wide applications, having a huge impact on the business itself. This position will interface with other teams, departments and third-party vendors.


    Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Make suggestions and improve monitoring solutions, including requirements analysis, proof-of-concept, implementation, documentation, and training to the team.
    • Effectively use and administer the existing portfolio of performance tools, including SolarWinds, Splunk, SCOM, SCCM.
    • Mentor junior performance engineers, technical service engineers and various others.
    • Utilize data analytics to improve visibility into the performance level of various IT operations.
    • Configure and manage alert tools and informational alert schedules for monitored production systems.
    • Prepare various reports relating to support as needed.
    • Stay current with system information, changes and updates.
    • Follow standard operating procedures.
    • Perform other duties as assigned

     Supervisory Responsibilities:

    • The position will not have supervisory responsibilities.
    • The position receives guidance with respect to overall objectives.
    • Some of the work is completed independently within corporate or department policy guidelines to achieve assigned objectives.

    Education and/or Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or related field and 5+ years of experience in an engineer/architect type role
    • Extensive knowledge of troubleshooting performance issues with complex large-scale multi-tier and distributed application infrastructures
    • Expert knowledge of an automation tool such as UC4, Ansible, Chef, Microsoft System Center
    • Good working knowledge of a common APM tool such as Dynatrace, Riverbed, New Relic
    • Expert knowledge of a common NPM tool such as Riverbed, SolarWinds or Dynatrace
    • Expert knowledge of a CAPS tool such as SolarWinds, CA Nimbus, or Nagios
    • Good working knowledge of a OI tool like Splunk, GrayLog2, or LogStash 

    Preferred knowledge requirements:

    • Development methodologies such as waterfall or agile
    • Common application software architectures, such as multi-tier, distributed, client-server, micro-services, SOA
    • A development language such as Perl, Bash, Powershell, JavaScript, Java, C# or C/C++
    • Knowledge and experience with a query language such as SQL, T-SQL, SPL, or PLSQL
    • Knowledge and experience with networking and the use of TCP/IP protocols
    • Knowledge and experience using a patch management system
    • Knowledge and experience using desktop image deployment systems
    • Knowledge and experience with desktop virtualization technologies
    • Knowledge and experience with asset management processes
    • Knowledge and experience in IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
