Senior Tax Accountant

Overview

Summary: The Sr. Tax Accountant’s primary job responsibility is the preparation of the monthly/quarterly GAAP and STAT tax provision.  This includes preparing of journal entries and reconciliations.  This person should be detail-oriented, organized, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries for areas assigned
  • Complete monthly account reconciliations for areas assigned
  • Coordinate outsourced tax preparation work and assist with preparing, reviewing, and filing tax returns in a timely manner, including year-end tax provision and accruals
  • Prepare the necessary supporting schedules for the federal and state income tax return filings, including state apportionment calculations
  • Assist in the preparation of calculations for quarterly estimated tax and extension payments, and submit electronic payments to the taxing authorities
  • Review and respond to federal and state tax notices
  • Coordinate audits by various taxation authorities, as needed
  • Implement and maintain internal controls within the tax function
  • Document processes and procedures in accordance with public company standards (SOX 404)
  • Assist in providing quarterly and annual deliverables to external and internal auditors
  • Document and explain changes in tax law or application of current tax law to changes in business practices
  • Assist with preparation of quarterly and annual statutory statements (Yellow Books)
  • Provide assistance and backup to other team members to ensure deadlines are met
  • Contribute to process improvements and implementation of automated financial tools
  • Handle special projects and other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Tax, or related field
  • CPA designation is a plus, but not required
  • Minimum of 2-5 years’ experience in corporate tax, preferred experience in public accounting
  • Understanding of taxation of insurance companies is a plus
  • Multi-state corporate tax experience is a plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs, especially Excel
  • Demonstrated success in a fast-paced team-oriented environment

Required Skills: 

  • Understanding of U.S. corporate tax law and the technical aspects of compliance
  • Proficient knowledge of ASC 740 calculations
  • Experience with SSAP 101 calculations is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, positive attitude, and strong work ethic
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Detail oriented with critical & analytical thinking skills
